AMERICAN AIRLINES EMPLOYEES GIVE FROM THE HEART
Marian Licce read the insert about Union Gospel Mission in Fort Worth’s Star Telegram. She was impressed that we could feed people Thanksgiving dinner for $1.52 and was inspired to help. Instead of just writing a check, she and friend Ruth Salas – both American Airlines Fleet Service Clerks (baggage handlers) – gave up their lunch break to walk the ramps in the baggage terminal at DFW Airport and asked their co-workers for contributions. They set a goal for themselves of raising $500.00 for the Mission.
They raised $823.00 on their lunch hours! “And we didn’t even catch the evening shift – that was just the morning crew,” Ruth said. “We’re gonna stay after and ask them around Christmas!”
The women were amazed at the enthusiasm of their co-workers. “It was easy”, said Marian. “Everybody dug in their pockets and gave us whatever they had… ones, fives, tens… they really wanted to help!”
Although neither of them had visited the Mission before, they hope to come back. They plan to interest their co-workers in volunteering with them in the future. Marian and Ruth brought their friend’s contributions to the Mission along with a reporter photographer from DFWpeople, the airport’s employee newspaper, in hopes that an article about their project would encourage other airline employees to get involved.
